Isee plenty of Protons cruising Hull's streets - most of them driven by members of Her Majesty's Constabulary. Humberside Police, in fact, have favoured the Malaysian manufacturer for a number of years, with a fleet of around 300 Protons converted to run on LPG gas. But why don't we see more of them bought by the general public? The Gen-2, for instance, is a mid-sized hatchback that competes in the same segment as the usual suspects: Golf, Astra, Focus, Megane and so on. It offers high equipment levels and, more importantly low prices. In fact this must be the cheapest family car to buy new on the road today.

So let's weigh the evidence to try to determine why Proton is still struggling in the popularity stakes.
