Summary

May I inform rabbit owners of a possible outbreak of myxomatosis in the wild rabbit population in the Scotter Road, Brumby Wood Lane, Bristol Road area of the town.

Whilst driving down Scotter Road from Bristol Road towards the viaduct recently, I saw a rabbit fumbling about on the verge. The animal displayed all the visual signs of the disease, uneasy gait, disorientated and with closed bulging eyes. Although I only saw the one, you can almost certainly guarantee there will be many more cases from where this poor animal came. Myxomatosis is a terrible disease which can affect all rabbits, including the domestic population. It is easily spread from host to host by fleas. There is no cure for the disease and if infected there is only one outcome for domestic rabbits which, in the absence of euthanasia is a slow and horrible death. However, although there is no cure once infected, rabbit owners can be reassured there is a vaccine which offers protection to pet rabbits against contracting myxomatosis. All veterinary surgeries stock the vaccine and all owners should consider having their pet rabbits vaccinated.
