Summary

I Write in reference to the headline in the Scunthorpe Telegraph (below), 'We want miles more money', (January, 14).

I work as a mental health carer for North Lincolnshire Council, which involves me and many other dedicated carers travelling around the North Lincolnshire area caring for people within their own homes. This is done in our own vehicles for which we receive a mileage allowance. Our rate is currently 40p per mile, but if we exceed 8,000-miles-a-year, the rate is then reduced. So as you can imagine, I read with great interest the Conservatives wanted to increase the councillors' mileage allowance of 10,000 miles. I would be very interested to know how much more they would like. I appreciate councillors are supposed to be working on behalf of the community, but there are also a lot of other people who are working for the community in jobs for North Lincolnshire Council who do not get the entitlements councillors claim for. These workers are sometimes vital to the welfare of community. I believe it is time they stopped bleating about more expenses and concentrated on the job they were elected to do; after all they are elected to serve the people, not as many seem to see it, profit from their position.
