WHEN the Audi A5 first arrived on our shores, I was most uncertain about its position in the "four-ringed" line-up. It did seemed to be an extra model possessing a degree of uncertainty about its marketplace. Styled after its deadly rival, BMW's 3-Series Coupe, it painted, from some angles, an unhappy pastiche. Therefore, to introduce a brand new A5 Sportback, using terminology that has been focussed on vehicles in the Audi line-up that possess more of an estate car bias, is surely set to add confusion to a range that I think is starting to look clunky.

Please do not misunderstand me. The A5 in 5-door form is a considerably better looking car than its 2-door sister. However, its introduction does beg the question, why bother, when there is a perfectly acceptable A4 and A4 Avant, while the A6 and its estate car variant sit happily above that range.
