Are Hospitals Winning the War On Superbugs?
Hospital superbugs have been slashed at Scunthorpe General Hospital, falling 75 per cent in the past year. An in-house cleaning team and anti-bacterial gels at every bed have helped bring about the drop, hospital bosses say.
Are you feeling the strain of the credit crunch? Then why not turn your talents into cold, hard cash, by taking part in this year's Scunthorpe Telegraph Pub Idol competition - where the top prize is a cool pounds500!
Take a Trip Back in Time at 684-Year-Old Home
History buffs can take a trip back in time this weekend with a visit to the region's oldest residential house. A Barton-Upon-Humber home, dating back to 1325, will open its doors to visitors on Saturday and Sunday.
Preparations are well under way for the 13th annual Barton bike night. The event will go ahead on Wednesday, July 8 thanks to the efforts of a new voluntary committee, set up in March to organise this prestigious event, after founder of the event Malc Bennett pulled out of organising it.
New School House Opened by Canon
A New school house was officially opened at Wooton St Andrew's Church Of England Primary School by Canon Peter Staves. It will be used as a community room for the village as well as an extra space for school use.
A Little thank you. On Saturday, June 20 my husband and I celebrated our diamond wedding anniversary - 60 years of wedded bliss!
Council Could Claim Back Up to Pounds4.2m
Up to pounds4.2-million of North Lincolnshire taxpayers' cash could be clawed back from stricken Icelandic banks, council chiefs have been told. Finance bosses told an audit committee meeting the council could recoup all but pounds1.3-million of the pounds5.5-million it had invested in Heritable and Landsbanki banks which collapsed last October.
Steel Delivered Despite Threat to Ship-Building Project
Corus Scunthorpe has already delivered most of the steel it is making for the Navy's new aircraft carriers. The statement followed speculation the Ministry Of Defence project could be under threat because of significant cost overruns caused by a two-year delay to the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, announced in October.
Hope This Is Shape of Things to Come
At last, common sense has finally prevailed. From today our fruit and veg no longer needs to be perfectly formed. We can now indulge in curvy cucumbers and odd-shaped onions thanks to abolition of EU rules on the size and shape of 36 types of fruit and veg.
Make Sleepwalk a Night to Remember
I Am writing in advance of our Sleepwalk on Friday to thank everyone involved with arranging this important fundraising event. So far we have registered more than 530 women who will set off from Glanford Park at 10pm to walk either a six or 13-mile route to raise valuable funds for hospice care.
With the purpose-built new bus lane being introduced on Oswald Road, Scunthorpe, and removal of car park spaces, I would suggest another idea to reduce congestion in this area - move the Register Office to somewhere more practical. With more weddings taking place there, to reduce nearby parking will not help visitors attending.
With reference to the article Festival is back and needs your Support in the Telegraph on Monday, June 22. The write-up is fine but the accompanying photograph would be more suited to the Bygones edition as Art at St Peter's and Art in the Park did not run last year and is not part of the event this year.
Pm: Decision On Bridge Tolls Rise Soon
Gordon Brown has pledged the Government will look at all aspects of the case against raising the Humber Bridge tolls. The Prime Minister said his new Transport Secretary Lord Adonis would make a decision as soon as possible.
Wonky cucumbers and knobbly carrots are set to return to North Lincolnshire shelves following the abolition of EU rules. Local greengrocers have given a warm welcome to the decision to scrap the ban on misshapen produce.
Funding to Help Prevent Repossessions
Extra funding is to be ploughed into debt advice and loans in a bid to stop families becoming homeless as a result of the recession. North Lincolnshire Council has been given pounds57,000 by the Government, pounds30,000 of which will be spent on local organisations which advise on debt management.
A Major plant in Scunthorpe is set to consolidate its aerosol filling manufacturing base, putting more than 200 jobs under threat. ColepCCL's Foxhills Industrial Estate plant, which carries out aerosol and liquid filling, announced yesterday it could potentially be closing its Scunthorpe branch as part of plans to expand its plants in Germany, Poland and Portugal.
Ofsted has praised a North Lincolnshire school for providing a 'family friendly atmosphere, where everyone is encouraged to care for each other'. Alkborough Primary School received high praise from inspectors for providing an 'excellent start for it's youngest children'.
Brothers Pay Tribute to Pop Hero in London
A Tribute to Michael Jackson has been paid by two Scunthorpe brothers who made a trip to London to visit shrines to the star. Former Scunthorpe Telegraph photographer Moey Modak and brother Naj, both life-long Jacko fans, made the 400-mile round-trip earlier this week.
Schools could apply to courts to tackle unruly children by targeting their parents with fines and even parenting classes, under Government plans. The Government yesterday published a White Paper to give schools stronger powers to apply to courts for parenting orders, which are backed by fines of up to pounds1,000 for those failing to co- operate.
Hospital Lab to Move From Lincoln
Campaigners in Lincoln, who fought to stop a microbiology lab being moved to Scunthorpe, have lost their battle. Lincoln County Hospital staff and patients feared moving the service from the hospital to Scunthorpe in April this year would put lives at risk.
